Riverside County's downtown jail, and what changes at the county line
Presley has been the county's downtown facility since 1989. It is one of five Riverside County jails, and knowing which of the five you are dealing with saves a great deal of the confusion families arrive with.
Downtown Riverside since 1989
Robert Presley Detention Center opened in 1989, replacing the old Riverside County Jail, and it sits in the downtown area of Riverside on Orange Street. The Sheriff’s Office runs it under a correctional captain, within a Corrections Division that also administers the Detention Care Unit at Riverside University Health Systems.
That division operates five jails across the county and describes itself as one of the largest jail operations in the state. Presley is the downtown one, and it is the facility most people mean when they say someone is “in Riverside” — but the county stretches from Corona to Blythe, and the other four are real possibilities depending on where an arrest happened.
The county line is the thing that catches people out
The area we cover straddles two sheriff’s departments. An arrest in Riverside or Corona is Riverside County business and ends up in this system; an arrest in Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga or San Bernardino belongs to the San Bernardino County Sheriff and a completely separate set of records.
Families almost never think in county boundaries, and there is no reason they should. But searching the wrong county’s records returns nothing, which reads exactly like “not in custody” and sends people to the wrong building. Rule it out first. If the arrest turns out to be a San Bernardino one, the two you most likely want are West Valley for the West End and Central for the east valley; the other jails we serve covers both counties.
Visiting here works differently from San Bernardino
Riverside splits Presley’s visiting week between two sides of the facility, A and B, with A-side days on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday and B-side days on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, both running from 8:00am to 10:00pm. Visits are capped at two a week and last around forty-five minutes, with two visitors per inmate and a minimum age of eighteen with photo identification.
Anyone used to the San Bernardino system — Wednesday to Saturday, one central appointment line — will find none of that transfers. Book through the Riverside number and confirm which side applies before you come. And as everywhere, visiting is not a step on the way to bail — the two run on separate tracks, and a bond can be posted while a visiting request is still pending.

A California bail licence is issued by the state, so the county line that complicates the records does not complicate the bond.
